It was the first time that a sitting mayor was expelled by his party, with candidates nominated directly by political organizations in five-year mayoral elections in municipal corporations. Parties could earlier back only one candidate.

Jehangir had been at the center of controversy on at least two previous occasions as mayor. Before the government approved rapid testing for COVID-19 amid the pandemic, he brought 50,000 test kits from China, saying “life, not rules, come first”.

He also announced the opening of mosques for prayers before the government ended restrictions on gatherings at places of worship amid the coronavirus lockdown.

The High Court issued a contempt of court order against Jahangir in a land ownership case.
