Awami League avoids conflict, focuses on increasing voting

Awami League will closely monitor the situation in some districts like Noakhali, Madaripur, Bogura and Pabna as the situation there has become heated due to the candidature of relatives of ministers-MPs or local infighting in the party.

Awami League's Madaripur politics is divided into two groups controlled by long-time central presidium member Shazhan Khan and joint general secretary AFM Bahauddin Naseem. By keeping the Upazila elections at the centre, their old rivalry has become stronger again. Shazhan Khan nominated his son Asibur Rahman for the post of Sadar Upazila Parishad chairman, while Bahauddin Naseem is supporting district Awami League organizing secretary Pavelur Rahman.

District Awami League President AHM Khairul Anam Choudhary is the President of Subarnachar Upazila Parishad of Noakhali for three consecutive terms. But this time local MLA Mohammad Ekramul Karim Chowdhury nominated his son Athar Ishraq Chowdhury as the candidate, creating a rift in the local Awami League.

According to several sources in the Awami League, the party leadership is unhappy with the activities of Shajahan Khan and Ekramul Karim Choudhary in the upazila elections. Their issue is a reason to instruct ministers and members of parliament not to vote for their relatives.

MLA Ajgar's brother Ali Monsoor is voting in Damurhuda upazila of Chuadanga. Naeem Hasan Joardar, nephew of MLA Soleiman Haq Joardar, is also in the contest. Other candidates expressed apprehension about the influence of MPs.

Despite repeated efforts, the candidature of Shakhawat Hussain, son of Sahdara Mannan, MLA from Sariyakandi, Bogura, could not be withdrawn. The MLA's brother Mihaduzzaman has also become a candidate from nearby Sonatala upazila.
