Hassan, joint general secretary of the ruling Awami League, said the film industry began its journey in Bangladesh in 1957 at the hands of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman with the establishment of the Film Development Corporation in Dhaka.

With time, under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, daughter of Bangabandhu, the film of the country is undergoing a metamorphosis nowadays.

“Many of our films have won many international awards. Last year, at the Bangladesh Film Festival in Kolkata, people stood in a kilometer-long queue from 9:00 am to watch our (Bangladeshi) film at 1:00 pm,” he said.

The minister further said that cinema halls which were closed are now being reopened and the number of cineplexes is also increasing.

He said that a Taka 10 billion soft-loan refinancing fund has been set up for renovation and modernization of cinema halls across the country.
