A student who secures less than 30 per cent marks in one or more subjects and does not perform well in Continuous Assessment (CA) is considered as less meritorious. According to DSHE, the class and subject teachers will prepare a list of these students and keep a record of the students’ name, roll number, reason for weakness, type of assistance and result of assistance on a diary.

The latest DSHE report has recommended identifying the less meritorious students and taking effective measures for them, while directing regional directors and district, upazila and thana education officers to implement these recommendations.

DSHE monitors and inspects secondary schools in the country after dividing them into five categories. Upazila and Thana Education Officers as well as other officials of DSHE have been assigned the task of monitoring and inspecting one A class (good) school every three months, B class school every two months, C class (good) school goes. One and a half months and one D category (weak) school every month, but sources say the schools are not closely monitored.

Speaking to Prothom Alo, Dhaka’s Ramna police station education officer Abdullah Al Farooq said that there are 39 schools under his jurisdiction and most schools take the step for week students, but some schools don’t take it at all.

According to education officials, students performing poorly in a subject will be tutored separately outside regular classes.

MD Abu Syed Bhuiyan, former principal of Government Laboratory High School, Dhaka, said it was not very difficult. But, the reality is that most schools don’t have enough teachers and many schools don’t even have teachers as per their orgogram, so it’s really difficult to work on.

For example, the Government Laboratory High School has 70-80 students in each class, he said, adding that the school does not have enough teachers to identify underperforming students and take classes separately.

Holidays are underway in secondary schools across the country. However, this correspondent saw AKM Obaidullah, Principal of Segun Bagicha High School in the capital, at the latter’s office on Monday.

Responding to a question on the measures taken to take care of the less meritorious students separately, he said that his school has a system to identify the weak students, but it is not possible to provide the support they need.

He said that the teachers are reluctant to stay after the stipulated time and it would have been better if there was a government directive in this matter.
