Family spending on education: low allocation may not ensure quality education

The most worrying fact revealed in the report is that Bangladesh tops the South Asian countries in terms of families spending money in the field of education. It was also found that private educational institutions charge nine times more fees than government institutions.

Private tuition was less popular earlier. This practice was completely absent in rural areas. Now tuition has become prevalent in almost all the fields. Parents have a belief that if their child does not take tuition, he/she will not be able to do well in the examination. If the parents do not find anyone skilled, then they send the children to take tuition from their own school teacher.

Students are now facing two types of problems. He is losing interest in attending classes. Students believe what is the need to attend class when they can learn from a private tutor?

We can look at government allocation for the education sector. While education experts are demanding more allocation in education sector, the rate of allocation in education sector is gradually decreasing, this news is very alarming.

Experts are of the view that 6 per cent of GDP should be spent on education while the current allocation is just 2 per cent. In some financial years it is even less. In the financial year 2022-23, the ratio of allocation in the education sector compared to GDP has been said to be 1.83 percent. Last year this allocation was 2.8 per cent.
