Human right situation in Bangladesh has always been a concern. The government repeatedly violated human right in many sectors. Especially poor people were the worst victim as they can’t afford to take legal action against the perpetrators.
Even many prominent citizens have been victim of human rights violation. Recent report by Amnesty International also condemned the government’s inaction in this regard. It was a longstanding demand to form national human right commission. Every government was reluctant to form it. At the end it was formed under a law in 2009 amid huge pressure from civil society.

But the Human Rights Commission was criticized for its inaction. Now the commission chairman says the law does allow the human rights commission to run its investigation in many cases. He says, a committee in is reviewing the law. It will propose some changes in the law.

The chairman gave an example, the commission wanted to investigate a case in Khulna, but it couldn’t. Because, the law exempted disciplined forces.

The law commission chairman suggests that the words ‘disciplined forces’ should be replaced by ‘defense forces’. He also mentioned that Bangladesh human rights commission enjoys more power than the Indian one. He asked the commission to use its full power.
