Ibn Sina is one of the leading pharmaceutical companies of Bangladesh. Its factory is built on thirteen acres of land in Kaliakoir upazila of Gazipur district near the capital Dhaka. The factory was operating without any clearance from Department of Environment for eighteen years. This factory produces about 168 types of drugs including antibiotics, anti-histamines, anti-ulcerants and anti-paretics.
Recently the Department of Environment officials visited the factory and they found that this factory is operating without any clearance form environment department. There is allegation that Ibn Sina Pharma officials didn’t co-operate with the environment department team.
The environment department officials arranged a hearing in this regard yesterday. In their written statement the company officials apologized for not having the clearance and not co-operating the environment department team.
At the end the company was fined five million taka.
The department of Environment director said they do not want to do anything which may hamper the growth of local industry. But an exemplary punishment was needed to show that the department will not tolerate anything which goes against the environment.
