The Indian Army and the Assam Rifles, which were called in to quell the violence in Manipur, have so far successfully rescued nearly 23,000 civilians and taken them to operating bases, an Indian Army statement said on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh met representatives of the ‘Coordination Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI)’ in the wake of violence in the state, informed the CM in a tweet.

The meeting, chaired by Biren Singh himself, was attended by political parties including Congress, NPF, NPP, CPI(M), Aam Aadmi Party and Shiv Sena.

The meeting took place after violence broke out in the immediate aftermath of inter-community clashes in some of the northeastern state’s districts amid protests against the inclusion of the majority Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribe (ST) category.

The Manipur government had requisitioned the Army and the Assam Rifles on May 3 and 4. State Director General of Police (DGP) P Dongle has said that the situation in the state has improved after the intervention of security forces.

Forces including Rapid Action Force (RAF), Border Security Force (BSF) and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) have been deployed in Manipur, he said and CRPF chief Kuldeep Singh has been appointed as security advisor.
