At least 528 people have been killed and about 4,600 injured in the violence, according to Sudan’s health ministry, but the death toll is expected to be much higher.

Fighting has also spread throughout Sudan, particularly in the long-restucated Darfur region, where eyewitnesses reported intense fighting and looting.

The United Nations said at least 96 people had been reported killed in El Jinina in West Darfur.

The UN World Food Program has warned that unrest could push millions more into starvation in a country where 15 million people already need aid to avoid famine.

According to the World Health Organisation, only 16 percent of health facilities in Khartoum are functioning, with many facilities in ruins.

On Sunday, the first Red Cross plane brought eight tonnes of humanitarian aid from Jordan to Port Sudan, which has so far been untouched by fighting and serves as an evacuation centre.

The aid included surgical supplies and medical kits to stabilize 1,500 patients.

Regional powers have joined talks to help end the violence.

An envoy of Burhan met Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan in Riyadh on Sunday, who called for peace to be restored in Sudan, his ministry said.

Egypt has called a meeting of its permanent representatives of the Arab League on Monday to discuss the “situation in Sudan”.
