A policeman was killed and four were injured when they came under attack by a group of villagers at Barkipur in Goainghat upazila of Sylhet early Tuesday.
Police in a raid arrested 12 people from the village for their alleged involvement with the incident.
The deceased was Sub-Inspector Mizanur Rahman, 45, of Goainghat Police Station. He hailed from Homna upazila in Comilla,
Superintendent of Police (SP) Shakawat Hossain of Sylhet said people of Barkipur village picked up about 80 to 90 cattle from neighbouring Naindahaur village on Saturday following a dispute between the people of the two villages.
After Naindahpur people filed a case against the residents of Barkipur on Monday, a team of Goainghat police, led by Mizanur Rahman, raided Barkipur village at about 3:00am and recovered the cattle.
When the law enforcers were taking those cattle to the police station, about 400 residents of Barkipur village equipped with lethal weapons attacked the cops, leaving Mizanur dead on the spot and injuring four others.
The injured policemen were admitted to Goainghat Upazila Health Complex. Their identities could not be known immediately
