Unplanned Dredging Won’t Save Brahmaputra

0 minutes, 45 seconds Read

No matter how much money is spent, unplanned dredging is of no use. The Brahmaputra river is its proof.

Dredging of the river in the Mymensingh portion began in 2019. The agitation for the demand for excavation was going on since 2009.

Even after four years, the river is yet to attain navigability. Also, instead of dredging the entire river, dredging is being done only in 100 meter width.

Silt from the river after dredging is piling up on the banks, returning to its original place during the rainy season.

Youths from Mymensingh city as well as several other upazilas staged a protest last Friday by standing knee-deep in water on the banks of the river. They protested symbolically and named it ‘Mritak Chitkar’ (the cry of the dead).

A civil society organization named ‘Zonaudyog’ on Saturday visited various places in the river and carried out investigations to find out anomalies in the dredging project.
