BNP is battered by government repression, arrests and ‘fake’ cases. No one from the party publicly announces candidacy in the next general election. A BNP leader, on condition of anonymity, said that if the situation is in favor of the party, he will jump into the election fray.

Convenor committees in the district and city units are running the BNP in the district. There is disappointment among party workers as there is no council and full committees in the party.

District BNP convenor Saiful Islam said the party cannot organize the council due to the current political situation. Nevertheless, the party is considering organizing councils along with the ongoing movement.

City BNP convenor Shamsuzzaman said, “We are in a better situation than the 22 fake cases. If the ongoing movement is successful then we will think about the candidates.

The leaders who are being discussed as BNP candidates are: Gangachara Upazila BNP convener in Rangpur-1 Wahiduzzaman, former MP Mohammad Ali Sarkar, Badarganj Paurashwa BNP convener Azizul Islam, Rangpur City BNP member secretary Mahfooz Un Nabi. And lawyer Golam Rosul in Rangpur-2, city BNP convenor Shamsuzzaman in Rangpur-3, industrialists Imdadul Haq Bhorosa and Afsar Ali in Rangpur-4 and district BNP convenor Saiful Islam in Rangpur-6.

No name emerged as a possible BNP candidate in Rangpur-5.
