365 citizens have called the national helpline 999 to complain about the sound of firecrackers during New Year celebrations.

Authorities received 160 calls in Dhaka, where newly introduced metro rail services were suspended for two hours on Sunday morning due to sky lanterns falling on tracks and power lines.

Abdus Sattar, an inspector with the National Emergency Service, said the police helped Dhaka citizens who called the helpline.

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police banned New Year’s Eve celebrations. He ordered the closure of all bars across the capital by 6 pm on Saturday. Outdoor events, as well as flying sky lanterns and bursting firecrackers, were prohibited.
