In 2006, a bloody conflict broke out between Israel and Hezbollah, killing more than 1,200 people in Lebanon, mostly civilians, and 160 people in Israel, mostly soldiers.

Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati said Israeli forces “directly targeted journalists as part of their ongoing attacks on Lebanese territory”.

UN chief Antonio Guterres expressed his “deepest condolences” to the family of Reuters journalist Abdullah and other journalists killed in the line of duty.

Guterres said of the Israel-Hamas conflict, “I want to say how much this shows the enormous risk of an outbreak of this conflict with respect to Lebanon.”

White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre said on Twitter, “Our thoughts are with the families of the journalists who lost their lives and those injured in Lebanon. Journalists do the vital work of keeping the public better informed, often in dangerous circumstances.” We do.”

The Israel-Lebanon border has seen a series of fires since a bloody attack on Israel by Palestinian Islamist group Hamas on October 7.

Hundreds of Hamas gunmen crossed the border from Gaza into Israel on Saturday, killing more than 1,300 people, most of them civilians, and capturing about 150 hostages.

Israel retaliated by bombing Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip, killing about 1,900 people, and warned the 1.1 million people in northern Gaza to move south.
