Students of Sylhet Nursing College demonstrate in front of Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital Monday, protesting an attack on some of them, allegedly by interns of the hospital.
The authorities today closed Sylhet Nursing College for an indefinite period following a demonstration waged by its students after interns allegedly beat up some trainee nurses at MAG Osmani Medical College and Hospital.
The students have been asked to vacate their dormitories by 6:00pm, Tanmoy Bhhattacharjya, deputy director of Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College and Hospital, told The Daily Star.
The authorities have decided to shut the college to avert any untoward situation as its students were continuing their agitation including work abstention, the deputy director said.
A total of 286 students of the college are currently serving the hospital. All the students of the college have to provide service to the hospital from their first year as a part of their academic education.
Protesting the incident, students of Dhaka Nursing College also staged demonstration at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital premises for one and a half hours since 9:30am and brought out a procession.
Yesterday, services at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital were halted for seven hours as nurses including the agitated students observed work abstention protesting interns’ assault.
Intern doctor Tofayel Ahmed beat up Proloy Chandra Bapari as the nurse arrived late at the hospital after being called there around 12:30am yesterday, student nurses alleged.
When some fellow nurses inquired about the beating, they also came under attack by Tofayel and his colleagues.
The general nurses withdrew their programme at 8:00am yesterday after hospital authorities assured them that necessary action would be taken against those accused. But the apprentice nurses did not join work till 11:00am when the report was filed.
The injured student nurses including Proloy are taking treatment at the hospital.
Over 200 students of Sylhet Nursing College boycotted examinations yesterday and demonstrated before the hospital protesting the attack.
