The winter wind also adds to the severity of the weather, causing misery for the poor. The laborers have to face a lot of difficulties while working in the cold. According to the Bangladesh Institute of Development Research (BIDS), a quarter of our total population is living in poverty. Most of them are involved in various low-wage occupations such as driving rickshaws or vans, working in garment factories, or working in the transport and construction sectors. They are trying to survive the bitter cold with only light blankets for comfort. Sometimes it becomes difficult for them to manage it too. Buying warm clothes is often a distant dream.
But we should not think only of human suffering. We also have to think about the animals. How did they survive the winter? Like humans, animals are also troubled in winter. The animals on the street often wander helplessly in search of shelter to escape the cold. Many pups die due to extremely low temperatures, and cats seek warmth. They don’t even have food.
We have to think about everyone. Whenever possible we should extend a helping hand to those less fortunate than us. We have to consider innocent animals too. How do they survive? We have to remember that we are the luckiest creatures on earth – we humans. So it is our responsibility to take care of them. Only then can we prove our humanity.
