Animal sacrificing is an integral part of Eid al-Adha which is also known as Eid Qurban. There are concerns that because of the pandemic situation fewer people will sacrifice animals this year. Fearing the spread of coronavirus health experts have been arguing for banning cattle market this year. But the authority has allowed cattle market with some precautions. Some are buying cattle online. Most of the cows and goats come from distant districts. Trucks and boats have been the only carrier. But this year Bangladesh Railway is operating special cattle trains from Southern and Northern parts of the country to the capital.
A special cattle train with seventeen wagons has already brought 261 cows to Dhaka. Other special cattle train will reach Dhaka from Chapainawabganj today. Railway will operate two special cattle trains from Khulna also.
Fare per kilometer will be 20 taka. It will cost less than 550 taka to bring a cow from Rajshahi to Dhaka, which is much lower than truck fare, and hence consumers will get cattle at a lower price.
Update : Trains from Chapainawabganj and Rajshahi are suspended due to very low response from cattle traders.
