This year’s Ekushey Book Fair is little different, fair is extended to adjacent Sahrawardi Uddyan. It was a longstanding demand from book lovers and publishers to extend the fair. There was conservative thought also; any alteration of the fair may ruin the tradition and spirit of the fair.
At the end Bangla Academy decided to go to extension, and now there is adequate space for book lovers to see books.
In spite of that there are some serious allegations from publishers. They say still there is no location map and people are finding it difficult to find a specific book stall. The fair premise still lack adequate drinking water and toilet facility.
In terms of visitors stall owners are very disappointed. But they are optimistic, every year it takes some time to gain momentum. They hope a good number of visitors will visit the fair from next Friday.
Though most stalls are waiting for visitors, but book lovers are queuing in front of the stalls which have Humayun Ahmed’s book, who is the most popular Bangladeshi writer, even after one and half years of his death.
The month long fair remains open from 3:00 pm to 8:30 pm, on the holydays it remains open from 11:00 am to 8:30 pm, but there is a break of 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm on Friday.
